Island County 4-H Club members were honored for their achievements at Achievement Night on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Oak Harbor Elks Club.
The event was a celebration of member accomplishments as well as a thanksgiving gesture to leaders and supporters.
The Oak Harbor High School ROTC kicked off the evening with a presentation of flags; afterward, Cara Mathews sang the National Anthem and Madison Krieg led pledges.
4-H supporters such as South whidbey Home Builders, Island Thrift, the Tulalip Tribes, Greenbank Store, Skagit Farmers Supply and Island County veterinarians, Island County Fair board superintendents and more were thanked.
Graduating members Caterina Amsler, Kimberly Foster, Cara Mathews, Carlee Mills and Tommy Molitor were recognized for their achievements throughout their years in the program. All leaders — including Bess Windecker-Nelson, Marilyn Lueken, Kelly Uhlig, Shanna Flower, Trish Coffey, Barbara Benway, Nicholle Wilson, Mike Benway, Hal Schlomann, Jenny Rector, Linnell Gribble and Carol Gannaway — were recognized for their years in the program as well.
Shelby Lubchuk won 4-H’er of the Year and Clinton resident Kim Larson, co-leader of Whidbey Island Homesteaders, won the 4-H Leader of the Year award. Emma Ruggiero, Greenbank resident and superintendent of the Poultry and Rabbit Divisions, won 4-H Superintendent of the Year. Elizabeth Bishop, Northwest Teen Representative to the Washington State 4-H Council, received a 4-H Youth Volunteer award.
Island County 4-H offers programs for ages 5-19. Participants are encouraged to choose a project they are interested in and collaborate with parents, leaders and other mentors to learn leadership and life skills, according to a news release.
Members have the opportunity to participate in the Whidbey Island Area Fair and State Fair.
