David Gignac, a well-known Langley artist, was chosen to create a label for Mukilteo-based Diamond Knot Craft Brewing’s new pale ale.

The company will launch its first pale ale called “Poop Deck Pale Ale” on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

For the project, he took pencil to paper to create “Le Poupe,” simply translated as a deck above the captain’s quarters on the aft of a ship. Other definitions lean toward being pushed by aft winds, which are favorable.

“It was fun working with Dave,” said Sherry Jennings, Diamond Knot’s spokeswoman. “I love the moodiness in his work, and all of our original artwork here at Diamond Knot captures the sea’s mystery, darkness and whimsy at times. Dave was perfect for the project. We had Sibyl Design in Snohomish add the graphic elements to the label to complete it. I love the bluff that Dave included and had Sibyl add the Mukilteo lighthouse for sense of place.”

Jennings, a Clinton resident, said craft beer enthusiasts should not judge the beer by its name. As pales go, it is low on bitterness and alcohol.

“We knew the name would raise eyebrows and bring a chuckle,” Jennings said. “Even our artist got a laugh after starting on another project for us that wasn’t nearly as fun.”

The first pints of the ale will flow at the Mukilteo Brewery & Alehouse at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 just before glasses are raised in celebration of Diamond Knot’s 19th anniversary. Jennings said everyone is invited.

“Whidbey islanders have been a big part of Diamond Knot’s success over the past 19 years,” she said. “We are grateful that we get to share our local product and fun locations with south enders.”
