A brushfire caused by fuel from a lawnmower burned a 200-by-200 foot area along Nighthawk Road in Langley on Aug. 7.
Two South Whidbey Fire/EMS units and Division Chief Wendy Moffatt responded to the scene at 1:37 p.m. which was only a short drive from where they were working at the Whidbey Island Fair. Most of the fire had been put out by the time firefighters arrived. The fire stopped just before the tree line.
“If it had kept going, there would have been some trouble,” Moffatt said. “The homeowner had most of it out by the time we got there. He did a good job of trying to extinguish it.”
No one was injured and there was no structural damage. Moffatt did not know exactly what ignited the fire, but speculated that it may have been a result of a hot engine combined with the fuel on the grass.
Firefighters used 2,000 gallons of water to help extinguish the fire.
“It was tall grass,” Moffatt said. “He was out there trying to mow down his grass to prevent a brush fire.”
