A meeting of the Langley City Council that was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 3 has been postponed, due to a lack of proper public notice.
Mayor Scott Chaplin sent out a message Monday morning about the meeting’s cancellation. Although it had been posted at kiosks outside of city hall and the post office and sent to the newspaper, he said, the agenda did not get posted online to the city’s website.
State law requires that local governments must post the agendas no later than 24 hours in advance of the meeting.
The agenda, which had been provided to The South Whidbey Record on Friday, included a presentation from the city’s citizen-led Climate Crisis Action Commission, a proposed interim ordinance establishing a new land use category for automobile detailing and a follow-up discussion on recognition of holidays, among other items.
Interim City Clerk Darlene Baldwin told The Record in an email that the council meeting will be moved to Monday, April 10. The council usually meets on every first and third Monday of the month.
This is the second time within the span of a month that the city has had to cancel a meeting that wasn’t properly noticed. An executive session that was scheduled for March 13 also had to be postponed to the end of a regular council meeting on March 20. Although executive sessions are not open to the public, a notice of the meeting still needs to be provided to the public and the newspaper.
