Langley’s $5.5 million budget for 2015 will have its final go-round with the city council and the public Monday night.
The city council’s final scheduled meeting of 2014 will include discussion of its budget, a major reduction from previous years because there are no large capital projects planned.
One exception is the funicular, a $500,000 county-funded project to connect the marina to the shopping area. A tram-like device would be installed along the Cascade Avenue bluff to move people and their belongings from the town’s commercial core to the marina off Wharf Street. Concerns about viability, necessity, view impacts and maintenance costs have been raised by citizens in previous meetings. Mayor Fred McCarthy included it as part of the 2015 budget because otherwise the city could not move forward with the project next year without an amendment to the budget.
Langley will also hear from the Langley Chamber of Commerce, which receives funding from the city, and the Langley Arts Commission, a citizen board. The former put on a string of holiday shopping events in the past few weeks. The arts commission is responsible for selecting public art funded by capital projects, such as the Second Street redesign earlier this year which funded a pair of sculptures in the plaza.
The Langley City Council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
