Langley City Council will look at its general fund budget at its upcoming meeting, Sept. 3.
The city’s general fund finances most operations in Langley. Property taxes, sales taxes and utility taxes make up the majority of the general fund, though fees for business licenses and building permits, for example, also go to the general fund. Intergovernmental funding — Department of Ecology shoreline grants, Conservation Futures grants, liquor excise tax and liquor profits, and criminal justice funds — is the second-highest revenue for Langley, behind taxes.
According to Langley’s general fund budget, the only incorporated city on South Whidbey ranks 36th out of more than 280 cities in Washington in its amount of sales tax per capita. Out of every $100 of goods and services purchased in Langley, the city receives 85 cents.
The council has a handful of other items on its meeting agenda, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Langley’s Civil Service Commission will give its semi-annual report.
Another city-appointed commission will report to the council. The Ethics Commission workshop will be discussed two weeks after the council’s first look at its future code of ethics.
Langley City Council meetings are held at City Hall, located at 112 Second St., Langley.
