A resolution adopting a summer water conservation program was approved by the Langley City Council on Tuesday night.

The program aims to reduce July and August water use by 1 percent in six years.

The city’s 987 commercial and residential customers used 10,142,876 gallons of water during July and August in 2009, said Challis Stringer, city public works director.

The city will continue education efforts on water conservation, including irrigation systems instead of hand-watering, and drought-resistant plants, Stringer said.

Langley also will continue to distribute free water-saving kits that include leak-detection tablets for toilets, faucet aerators and a shower regulator, she said.
