Langley resident Melyssa Smith is making Whidbey proud.

The 17-year-old dancer competed with thousands of other dancers over the five-day Showstopper Nationals competition in Anaheim, Calif. On Friday, July 18, she scored 118.1 out of a total possible 120 points and won fourth place, the “Crystal” trophy, in the lyrical/jazz category for her self-choreographed, emotional solo performance of “I Dreamed a Dream,” from the musical “Les Miserables.”

Smith placed 13th overall (both jazz/lyrical and all other dance styles: hip hop, open, musical theater, tap, ballet, contemporary and jazz) out of more than 200 entries in the 15-adult age group, Advanced “Competitive” Division.

Smith also scored a fifth place “Crystal,” trophy age-17 award for her self-choreographed open style dance solo to “5 Secrets.”

Smith danced as an Independent and trained with Jamee Pitts at Island Dance, performed in Whidbey Island Dance Theatre’s “Nutcracker,” and trained with Metropolitan Gymnastics and Allegro Performing Arts Academy.

Her total wins for the regional “Overall” awards included two first places, one third place, one fourth place, one fifth place, one sixth place and one seventh place.

She was also awarded eight dance scholarships, two photogenic awards and a Judge’s Choice award labeled “Extension Suspension.”
