A Langley man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after having a truck roll over his chest Monday morning.
Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said Michael Ferren, 45, was in satisfactory condition upon arrival Monday and remained in satisfactory condition Tuesday morning.
South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Paul Busch was on the scene and said the Langley man was working under a ¾-ton truck parked along Brainers Road in Freeland when the vehicle rolled over him.
“For some reason, it rolled back and rolled over his chest,” Busch said.
Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident as well, and Sgt. Laura Price confirmed the story.
“All we know is that he was trying to adjust a transmission or clutch cable, and it broke free and rolled over him,” Price said.
Busch said it appeared that another car parked behind the truck, a GMC 1500, stopped the runaway vehicle.
Ferren was able to move his fingers and toes, said Busch, a hopeful sign that he didn’t suffer paralyzing damage, but the extent of his injuries were unknown at the time.
“He stated to the medic he heard some bones cracking,” Busch said.
The emergency responders from Whidbey General Hospital EMS drove him to South Whidbey High School, where the helicopter crew was waiting to pick him up. Ferren was taken by Airlift 6 to the emergency room of Harborview in Seattle.
