A torn Achilles injury hampered the Langley Police Department.

David Marks, a longtime officer in Langley, injured his Achilles tendon recently. He tried to pull over a vehicle driven by Travis Loetterle, 22, who was wanted on warrants. Loetterle bailed from the car near State Highway 525 and Crawford Road and ran into the woods. Marks chased after him but stepped on a log at an awkward angle and tore his Achilles tendon.

Loetterle was apprehended a couple of hours later by an Island County Sheriff’s deputy.

The injury dropped the city’s law enforcement staff to two officers and Police Chief Randy Heston, who worked 13 days in a row earlier this month around the Choochokam Arts festival in Langley.

“It just means we have to work a little bit more, a little overtime here and there,” Heston said.

Langley’s police added a third full-time officer in March. After a year of three-officer rotations, overtime pay and reserve pay warranted the reinstatement of a third officer to city leaders. Heston did not have a date of return for Marks, which could be as soon as October and as late as December.
