Langley proclaims July 26 as Island Shakespeare Festival Day

Let it be known throughout the realm that evermore, the fourth Saturday of July shall be Island Shakespeare Festival Day in Langley.

Let it be known throughout the realm that evermore, the fourth Saturday of July shall be Island Shakespeare Festival Day in Langley.

The Langley City Council agreed to the proclamation, as read into the record by Mayor Fred McCarthy, at its July 21 meeting.

As such, it is asked that people in Langley wear a bandana on July 26 in honor of the Wild West theme of “The Taming of the Shrew” produced by the Island Shakespeare Festival that opens this weekend.

Bandanas may be purchased from Good Cheer thrift stores.

To mark the occasion, some of the festival’s organizers and board members came adorned in Western garb — leather boots, Stetson hats, denim, vests — including McCarthy and Clerk-Treasurer Debbie Mahler.

“I just want to thank you so much for being so Whidbey,” said Donna Hood, a festival board member, as the council sported their Old West attire.
