Langley’s plans for extending sewer service swirled down the toilet this week.

Due to public opposition to the city of Langley’s plan to extend sewer service to a number of new neighborhoods, a public hearing on the project scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Langley United Methodist Church tonight has been cancelled.

According to Langley Mayor Lloyd Furman, the city has received letters of opposition to the formation Local Utility Improvement District #9 representing more than 50 percent of the property value that would have been affected by the $2.8 million project. Furman said extending the sewers within this planned LID — which was to include Edgecliff Drive, Furman and Decker avenues, First Street, Third Street and a portion of Saratoga Road — is a “dead” issue in its current form, since a majority of property owners have objected prior to the city council voting on whether or not to form the LID.

The LID was to include 129 property owners, who could have been billed for up to about $13,000 each for a sewer hookup, as well as several thousand dollars in other fees.
