“Langley’s merchants had a fine year in 2000 if the city’s sales tax receipts are any indication.2000 was an all-time high for us, city clerk-treasurer Debbie Mahler told the City Council Wednesday night, referring to sales tax and overall tax receipts. We ended the year with some pretty stable cash flow.The city’s sales tax revenues in 2000 totaled $252,646, up from $229,686 the prior year.The month of December was below the 1999 level of sales tax collections, however. That was blamed on the Washington State Ferries’ construction project that closed the Mukilteo terminal mid-day throughout December. Some would-be Langley tourists apparently made other plans.Council member Ray Honerlah said Langley businesses did well on weekends during December, but during the week it was a bummer. But with the overall increase, nobody complained much about December. The only revenue category to show a downturn last year was from winter moorage at the harbor. That brought in $18,896 in 2000 compared to $23,594 in 1999. “
