Langley urged to adopt rules for outdoor uses

A set of “simple stanards” for Langley merchants who set up seating areas and other activities outside their shops was urged by Langley city planners at Monday night’s city council meeting.

“We see a real benefit to doing this,” said Larry Cort, city planning director. “It’s not a long list of things.”

He said the primary issues would center around public safety “and a common set of easily understood standards.”

The regulations would center around local businesses that provide outdoor seating and outdoor concerts, especially when it involves parking areas.

Councilman Robert Gilman said city planners have a lot to deal with already, and should be cautious about adding more work.

“I think it can be done relatively simply,” Cort said. “We just want to be sure to deal with everyone equally.”

The council directed Cort to proceed, but to come back for direction if the task proves more complicated than expected.
