A miss and the Falcons might get a chance for one more shot. Or at least an overtime period.Nothing but net. Rats.“It’s frustrating,” said Falcon coach Brian Kissinger after watching his team lose 61-58 in their opening game of the Falcon Classic Christmas tournament at Erikson Gymnasium Wednesday to tumble to 1-6 for the year. “We did enough things right to win. But we also did enough things wrong to lose, too.”South Whidbey played Coupeville, which lost to Lynnwood 55-50 in overtime earlier in the day, for third place Thursday. Lakeside, which snapped a four-game losing string, met Lynnwood for the championship.Probably the most damaging mistake the Falcons made against Lakeside was not managing the clock very well late in the game. After senior Daniel Levine hit a twisting layin to knot the score at 58 with 1:12 to go, Lakeside turned the ball over on a bad pass with 1:06 to play. South Whidbey worked the ball around until Levine finally took and missed a short jumper with 30 seconds left. In the scramble for the rebound, the Falcons got a break when a Lakeside player was called for being out of bounds, giving South Whidbey possession with :27 on the clock.Following a timeout, Kissinger’s plan was to work for one shot and either get the win or force an overtime. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Lai Saephan put up a difficult running jumper from the side of the key with 20 seconds still remaining. “It wasn’t exactly the shot we were looking for,” said Kissinger.The shot glanced off the rim, Lakeside rebounded, pushed the ball upcourt and Lazowaska drilled what turned out to be his game-winner with 10 seconds left.The Falcons hurried up the floor after inbounding the ball with seven seconds remaining, but were forced to settle for Brian Moote’s three-point attempt under heavy pressure from the top of the key. It was well off the mark.Saephan once again led the Falcons with 15 points, hitting on 5-of-12 shots. The 5-foot-6 senior guard sank four three-point goals for the third consecutive game, including a clutch one that immediately followed a Lakeside trey and tied the score at 56-all with 2:12 to go. Levine and Ben Priest also reached double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. The 6-3 Moote, still hampered by an ankle injury, topped Falcon rebounders with eight but scored just four points on 2-of-10 shooting. Priest added seven rebounds. Overall, South Whidbey shot a nippy 36 percent from the field as a team, hitting only 20-of-56 attempts. They also connected on only 13-of-21 free throws, 62 percent.On the plus side, South Whidbey had only six turnovers to Lakeside’s 16. They also took four charges, the last of which by sophomore Colin Murphy sent Lakeside’s top scorer Tyler Peterson to the sideline with his fifth personal with 1:38 left in the game. Peterson was the only Lakeside player in double figures, finishing with 21. Lazowaska wound up with eight.”
