A community meeting on a proposed residential recycling service will be held this week in Langley.

The meeting is 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at St. Hubert Catholic Church’s Reed Hall.

Discussed will be the proposed addition of recycling pickup for residents currently being served by Island Disposal, owned by Waste Connections.

Jerry Mingo, the county’s recycle and hazardous waste coordinator, said Island County is exploring the possibility of expanding curbside recycling.

Island Disposal discontinued some curbside recycling this year for economic reasons, but continues to sort mixed recyclables that are collected at curbside under contracts with Oak Harbor and with Whidbey Island Naval Air Station housing.

Island Disposal also collects cardboard and mixed paper from subscribing businesses.

Mingo said counties that have recycle rates above 40 percent tend to offer residential curbside collection and maintain recycle centers for those who prefer to haul their own trash and recyclables.

The proposed roadside recycling service would not affect public access to county-operated recycle parks or transfer stations.
