Literary evening to benefit Whidbey’s Good Cheer Food Bank

As it was for the Pilgrims, the bounty of the autumn harvest represents all that we, as Americans, are thankful for, and we often show that gratitude by gathering around a healthy feast.

As it was for the Pilgrims, the bounty of the autumn harvest represents all that we, as Americans, are thankful for, and we often show that gratitude by gathering around a healthy feast.

The folks at Good Cheer Food Bank are continually thinking about gracing the tables of hungry islanders with that same healthy bounty and giving the less fortunate a reason to be thankful.

That’s why events such as the annual “Good Cheer Food Bank Benefit” are so necessary.

The students and guests of Molly Cook’s Skylark Writing Studio will hold an evening of prose and poetry to celebrate autumn and to benefit the food bank. The event starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Front Room at the Bayview Cash Store.

“On an island, we are responsible for each other in ways that people on the mainland don’t understand. If one of us goes hungry, we all go hungry. Islanders quickly learn that generosity toward others is generosity toward ourselves,” Cook said.

Admission to the event is free. Cash and check donations for the food bank are welcome, and guests are asked to bring non-perishable food items, especially canned beans (pinto, black, kidney, baked, etc.), peanut butter, canned meats, healthy cereal, hearty soups and crackers. Special dietary items are always needed, such as low-sodium or gluten-free foods.

Skylark readers include Allan Ament, Beth Robinson, Clyde Monma, Janice O’Mahony, Gillian Haws Webster, Rob Harrison, Faith Wilder, Michele Coleman, Wendy Lambeth, Erik Christensen, Erika Sanders, Davison Stivers, Skylark writing teacher and writer Cook and special guest poet Victory Lee Schouten.

Skylark writers will entertain with short selections from their work, and Cook will treat listeners to a short piece from her new novel, “Tonight on the Six O’Clock News.”

Complimentary cookies, coffee and tea will be available. Guests are asked to come and support both writing friends and the food bank.

For information, call 321-1910 or e-mail molly@skylarkwritingstudio.com. Help is needed to set up chairs and make coffee.

The event is sponsored by Molly Cook’s Skylark Writing Studio.
