Local churches announce topics of Sunday services

South Whidbey churches have announced the topics for services this Sunday.

UUCWI examines human nature

What is human nature?

We tend to think of human nature as that which is innate and common to all human beings. Are sexual orientation, race and other innate traits also part of human nature? At the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island, Rev. Kit Ketcham will reflect on these issues and how we might respond to those traits which cause such societal controversy.

UUCWI gathers at 10 a.m. Sunday at 20103 Highway 525, Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

‘Be right or be happy’ at Unity

Keith Mack will present the message “Be right or be happy” at the Sunday service for Unity of Whidbey.

“A Course in Miracles” asks if we would rather be right or happy; teaching that the ego’s insistence on being right will never lead to peace.

At Sunday’s service, Mack uses principles from the course to explore the choice between right and being happy.

Tadd Charette-Nunn, Melinda Mack and Hannah Mack will provide music for the service, which begins at 10 a.m. at Bayview Community Hall. All are welcome.

SWCC pastor talks about a new direction

The sermon Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church is by Pastor Darrell Wenzek, and it is titled “Taking on a New Direction,” based on James 1:16-18.

Immediately following the morning worship, there will be a quarterly congregational meeting and potluck, also at the Deer Lagoon Grange.

SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

UUCWI to start EvenSong Service

On the second Wednesday of each month, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island will hold a quiet, contemplative candlelight service of chant, meditation and readings (there will not be a sermon).

This service will be accompanied by a harpist. All are welcome. The next service is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Service focuses on the word of Jesus

To follow the word of Jesus, one must, according to him, do the “works” that he did, which involved healing according to divine rules. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.” (Matthew 10:8)

On Sunday, Oct. 11, the service at the Christian Science church focuses on the question, “Are Sin, Disease and Death Real?” in part to consider Jesus’ command to heal the sick and raise the dead.

Everyone is welcome at this healing service, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at 5910 Highway 525.
