An accomplished musician with Whidbey Island roots is missing on Mount Rainier.

Devin Ossman, 45, did not return from a day hike in the Mount Rainier National Park Monday. The Mukilteo man had left home for Mount Rainier sometime Sunday.

A family member told The Record Wednesday that the family had not received any news about his whereabouts and were hoping for his safe return.

The search began after a park ranger noticed Ossman’s car in a parking lot shortly before nightfall Monday. His wife had reported him missing to Mukilteo police earlier in the day.

Rangers searched the park Tuesday. Four teams and a bloodhound were unable to find any evidence of Ossman. Helicopters were not used because of bad weather.

A park spokeswoman said searchers will focus on the Kautz Creek Drainage trailhead. Searchers had found some tracks in the area at the 3,400-foot level, but the tracks disappeared.

The search resumed Wednesday. Sixteen searchers and two dog teams are looking in the Kautz Creek Drainage area for Ossman.

A helicopter will join the search if weather allows, park officials said.

The forecast is for overcast skies with a chance of snow in the morning above 1,500 feet. Forecasters said snow is likely Wednesday night above 2,500 feet.

Devin, a flautist, composer and music teacher, is a member of the Ossman family of Freeland. The family is active in the arts community on the island, and Ossman has played at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts many times. He was also scheduled to play again at WICA in May.
