Loss a downer, win a boost for girls

Falcons get lowly Sultan again Saturday

It’s been a long time, but the Falcon girls clearly remembered how to win this week.

Without a victory since beating Mount Baker on Jan. 10 for their only North Cascades Conference win of the season to that point, the South Whidbey girls travelled to Sultan Thursday to take on the bottom-ranked Turks.

Only one rung higher than 1-12 Sultan in the NCC standings, the Falcons nonetheless exploited their slight advantage until the game was a route. Led by senior Julie Robinson, who scored 19 points, and sophomore Mary McCune with 13, the Falcons slammed the Turks in a 22-point second quarter on their way to a 58-33 win.

The game was never close. For the first time in 2003, the Falcons had three girls in double scoring figures, thanks to big efforts from Robinson, McCune and freshman Catie Newman. Robinson’s points counted the heaviest, as she made 14 of her total in that big second quarter and nailed three three pointers on the night.

The girls also had more success at the free throw line than they’d experienced in the past two weeks. Going 13-for-17, they were never at a disadvantage from the charity line or from the field.

The team’s only losing quarter came in the fourth, when the Turks outscored them 9-8.

Two nights earlier, the story was not so positive for South Whidbey. Hosting 8-5 Nooksack Valley in Erikson Gymnasium, the Falcons were too good to their guests, capitulating 59-40 in a game marked by poor shooting.

Though they stayed close from the tip off into the second quarter, the Falcons could not get an offensive rhythm. The Pioneers blocked the lane and almost any chance of an inside shot. From beyond the arc was the only place the Falcons had any luck as Robinson hit three treys and Amy Dumke one.

The week’s action leaves the Falcons with a 2-8 NCC record and a 3-11 overall record. They play Sultan again today at 2:30 p.m., this time at home.
