A 39-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of trying to buy a gun in violation of a court order and lying to the ATF, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Jason D. Norton in Island County Superior Court July 19 with unlawful possession of a firearm in the third degree and false swearing.

Last November, a judge in Island County Superior Court ordered Norton not to possess any dangerous weapons as a condition of release.

In that case, Norton was charged with assault in the second degree with a deadly weapons because he allegedly put a gun to the head of a man who came to Norton’s home looking for his wife, according to court documents.

Then on July 15, an employee from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs contacted an Oak Harbor police officer and advised him that Norton had attempted to purchase a gun from a gun store in Oak Harbor, according to the police report.

An employee at the gun store said Norton tried to purchase a handgun and a “lower” for an assault rifle, but the sale was blocked by the ATF because of the court order, the police report said.

An employee told the officer that Norton had come to the store and picked up the gun to inspect it, the report states.
