A man who dragged a deputy for a short distance while trying to drive away is facing felony charges in Island County Superior Court, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Fernando Aguilar Jr. last month with attempting to elude and assault in the third degree.

On June 30, 2016, a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a disorderly man at a church north of Oak Harbor. He arrived to find Aguilar inside a truck and a small group of angry people next to the truck; one witness claimed Aguilar had pushed the pastor.

The deputy tried to speak with Aguilar as he tried to get the truck into gear. The deputy grabbed Aguilar in an attempt to stop him and opened the truck door. Aguilar managed to get the truck into reverse and the deputy got caught “inside the doorway” of the vehicle, according to the deputy’s report.

The deputy was able to regain his footing as the truck stopped. He tried again to pull Aguilar from the truck, but the suspect put it into gear and drove off.

The deputy pursued Aguilar as he fled on Goldie and Ault Field roads and then onto the highway. Aguilar drove more than 80 mph during the chase, the report indicates.

Aguilar lost control of his truck as he was headed north in the Sleeper Road area. The truck went into the ditch and then swerved out, going across both the northbound and southbound lanes. The truck began to skid and went back across the northbound lanes, striking an embankment and rolling “numerous times,” the deputy wrote.

Aguilar was trapped inside his car but eventually extricated by firefighters.

If convicted of the charges against him, Aguilar could face up to 57 months in jail under the standard sentencing range.
