Man killed in Regatta Drive accident, passenger hurt

A man died in a car crash on Southeast Regatta Drive in Oak Harbor Thursday evening.

A 93-year-old driver died as a result of injuries sustained in a collision on Southeast Regatta Drive in Oak Harbor Thursday evening, the Washington State Patrol reported.

A passenger as also injured and transported to the hospital.

According to a memo prepared by a state trooper, Karl H. Lutz of Oak Harbor was driving a 1998 Mercedes 420 sedan southward on Regatta Drive and failed to yield to a 2003 Silverado pickup that was eastbound on Southeast Eighth Avenue, making a left turn onto Regatta Drive.

The two vehicles collided at the intersection.

The accident was reported at about 5:30 p.m.

Karl Lutz and his passenger, 86-year-old Mechthild Lutz of Oak Harbor, were transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center for treatment, according to the report. Karl Lutz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the hospital.

The driver of the pickup, 52-year-old Shawn Hamlin of Oak Harbor, was not injured.

The Mercedes was totaled in the accident and the pickup received reportable damage, according to the Washington State Patrol.

There were no indications that drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision, the trooper indicated, and the investigation into the cause is ongoing.
