Langley Mayor Paul Samuelson is getting ready to staff two new citizens advisory boards.

At tonight’s city council meeting, city officials will have the first reading of the revised regulations Langley’s Parks/Open Space Commission.

The creation of the board has been long anticipated since the community reworked the city’s growth plan. Many agreed that more open space is needed in town, but opinions differed broadly on how to create such areas.

The new board will advise Samuelson and the city council on how to proceed in matters related to preserving open space.

At the same time, Samuelson will bring a new uniform code for boards and commissions, plus make revisions to other boards and commissions to clarify how they are supposed to work. Then the city of Langley will put out a call for volunteers.

“We will start publicizing for parks and open space applicants in mid-May with the mayor’s appointments brought for council approval at the June 18 council meeting,” said Kathleen Landel, special assistant to the mayor.

Samuelson will also be filling some vacant positions on the cemetery and library boards at the same time.

There are a total of 10 appointments to make between the three boards and commissions.

Also taking shape is the new economic development council.

“The economic development council will be a mayor’s task force with Paul inviting a diverse spectrum of key stakeholders to participate,” Landel said.

“The focus will be working with the economic development element of the comp plan to make recommendations to the mayor,” she added.

Samuelson will be working on the structure of the council starting in mid-May. The target for the first meeting of the mayor’s economic development council is early July.

The Langley City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight at city hall.
