Mukilteo pier removal is ahead of schedule

Demolition and deconstruction of the former Mukilteo oil tank farm pier is almost complete and months ahead of schedule.

Demolition and deconstruction of the former Mukilteo oil tank farm pier is almost complete and months ahead of schedule.

Taking out the structure is part of the Washington State Department of Transportation, Ferries Division, plan for a new ferry terminal at that site. Removal of the existing pier was originally scheduled for completion in February 2017.

Work began in July with removal of the pier’s creosote-soaked pilings. It is expected to be under budget by $1.5 million, according to a story in The Herald.

Construction of the new terminal, however, will not be accelerated. Design of the new terminal should be 60 percent complete by the end of next month.

The new Mukilteo ferry terminal, designed as a multimodal facility to allow for cross-transit access to buses, trains, and cars, is scheduled to open in April 2019.
