Navy base to open doors to the public

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island invites the public in once again for an open house.

Sailors are seen all over Oak Harbor and Navy planes occupy the surrounding skies, but come Sept. 7, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island invites the public in once again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an open house and a behind-the-scenes look.

The event will kick off with a 7 a.m. registration for a 5K run around the flightline. Growlers, P-8s, Search and Rescue helicopters and more will be displayed as guests trickle in.

Bring a photo ID to the Charles Porter Ave. gate to enter the base, where staff will provide parking instructions.

Alcohol, large bags, backpacks, weapons, coolers, cameras with lenses exceeding a 200 mm zoom, tripods, drugs and pets are not allowed. Strollers, diaper bags, small purses, wheelchairs, certified service dogs, bottled water and small cameras have the green light.
