A Navy man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on North Whidbey Thursday night, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The State Patrol reports that 24-year-old Chaz D. Mcinelly was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the accident memo, Mcinelly was riding a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle south on Highway 20 near Deception Pass. He attempted to pass several other vehicles at a high rate of speed in the area near Deception Circle.

Mcinelly’s motorcycle collided with the front driver’s side of a 2006 Ford 350 truck driven by 63-year-old Daniel Allen of Oak Harbor. The State Patrol reported that Allen activated his turn signal but hadn’t yet made a pass when the accident occurred.

Allen was not injured.

The collision was reported at 8:41 p.m. Both lanes of the highway were closed down for the response and the Washington State Department of Transportation issued a traffic warning memo.

The State Patrol reports that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The cause is under investigation by the agency.

Mcinelly was wearing a USDOT compliant helmet and Allen had his seatbelt on, the State Patrol reported.

The Island County Coroner’s Office reported that Mcinelly was an active duty member of the Navy and was from Arizona originally. His family in Arizona were notified of the tragedy.
