A Clinton man is in jail after threatening to kill deputies with the Island County Sheriff’s Office and repeat what his uncle did nearly 21 years earlier.
Ryan Hutchinson, 24, and Jeremy Galton, 31, were arrested July 22 in connection with a burglary on Humphrey Road, according to court documents.
Once in custody, Hutchinson threatened the officers. He also injured the hand of a deputy while being taken into custody and tried to bite another officer.
“I will kill you [expletive deleted], you will be the next [expletive deleted] Island County deputy killed by a Hutchinson,” Hutchinson allegedly said to the officers.
The Hutchinson family is well -known to police.
On Nov. 14, 1987, Darren Hutchinson shot and killed deputies William Heffernan and John Saxerud in an inmate processing room in the Island County Jail in Coupeville. Afterward, he stole a patrol car and abandoned it in a ravine. He was arrested a short time later in his parents’ house in Clinton and gave a taped confession. In 1989, a jury found Hutchinson guilty on two counts of aggravated first-degree murder.
This week, Hutchinson’s nephew and his friend, Galton, were arrested after witnesses connected them to a residential burglary.
Neighbors saw someone break into a trailer on Humphrey Road and told police it was Hutchinson and Galton because the men had come to a nearby home earlier and asked for drugs. The pair was turned away.
One of the witnesses chased the burglars in his car and took a digital photo that he later handed over to police.
Deputies arrested the two Clinton men after they were found walking on Highway 525 near Cedar Vista.
When the men were arrested, Hutchinson became combative and repeatedly threatened the deputies.
Deputy John Sawyers wrote in his report that he had to stop the sheriff’s car because Hutchinson broke a window.
While the officers put restraints on Hutchinson, he threatened them again. He also started spitting at the police.
“You know that propane tank by your precinct? I can blow it up and all of you [expletive deleted] in there real easy,” Hutchinson shouted, according to the police report.
Hutchinson injured Sawyers and another deputy as he continued to resist.
He later pulled off a spit shield that officers had put on him and spit on Sawyer, with Hutchinson adding that he had AIDS.
He also continued to threaten Sawyers and his family.
“I know where your girls catch the bus and I can [expletive deleted] them up before you know it,” Hutchinson allegedly said, according to court documents.
Then he threatened to blow up a deputy’s car and his home.
“I will blow your [expletive deleted] home with C4 while you are sleeping,” he allegedly said.
Hutchinson claimed he broke his wrist during the scuffle with police, but continued to be obnoxious and threatening while at the hospital to get an injury checked out. According to Sawyers’ statement, he continued to brag about his uncle killing two Island County deputies.
Doctors determined his wrist was not broken. He was later booked into Island County Jail on a $40,000 bond.
The prosecutor’s office charged Hutchinson with attempted residential burglary, harassment/ threats to kill, and first-degree malicious mischief.
Galton was charged with attempted burglary.
