LANGLEY — The city’s new $1.5 million fire station is open for business.
“We’re very pleased,” Island County District 3 Fire Chief Dan Stout said. “It’s going to be here for a long time.”
He said an open house for the public will be today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The station is at 820 Camano Ave., across the street from the Island County Fairgrounds. There will be refreshments, and tours of the building.
The station, to be staffed exclusively with volunteers, will house two fire engines, a marine rescue unit consisting of a Zodiac boat and towing unit, an aid unit and a technical rescue unit.
Its “four-bay drive-through” design of similar doors front and back means there will be a minimum amount of vehicle backing, Stout said.
The building has an office, a meeting room for staff training, a physical training room, a storage room, a shop and storage on the second floor. The station, featuring an exterior of stone and metal and composite siding, was designed by Carletti Architects of Mount Vernon and built by Advanced Construction of Mukilteo.
Construction began in February.
“The architects took a lot of time and effort to get it to fit in with the community,” Stout said.
The 2.9-acre site is shared by Island Transit, which has established a landscaped park-and-ride lot surrounding the station.
Stout said the station was built with cash on hand and is debt-free.
“The project went very smoothly,” Stout said. “It was a good government-public effort.”
Meanwhile, the city of Langley is trying to decide what to do with the former station house on Second Street.
Four proposals were presented to the city council last week that may help recoup the $2,500 a month rent the fire district had been paying. The council will hear presentations on the proposal at the council meeting on Monday.
