Langley will welcome a new officer in an official swearing-in ceremony Monday.

Officer Michael Beech will swear in as a member of the Langley Police Department during the city council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Beech served in the United States Marine Corps for four years and worked for the Island County Sheriff’s Office for two decades.

His hiring restores the police staff to its full level of three officers and a chief. It also comes amid pending litigation over the termination of former officer Mitch Hardin, who has alleged that he was fired because he was not following direction from Chief Dave Marks regarding the Langley Police Guild, of which Marks was the former president.

Several development code amendments will go before the city council. One includes restructuring the Design Review Board, which handles tasks such as street signage, into an advisory board. The change would also make it possible for the design board to advise the city on public improvement projects.

The city council is also scheduled to watch a video about the Salish Sea and hear a report from the Historic Preservation Commission.
