League to host candidates night

The League of Women Voters of South Whidbey Island will host a candidates’ forum at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

The forum will include candidates for Island County commissioner, District 1; Island County Superior Court judge, Position 2, state senator for District 10, and Positions 1 and 2 for District 10 in the state House of Representatives.

Meet third party candidate in Clinton

Rockhoppers in Clinton will host a coffee klatch with Sarah Hart later this week.

Hart is running as an America’s Third Party candidate in the race for senator of Legislative District 10. She is hoping to unseat Democratic incumbent Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen. Linda Haddon, an Oak Harbor Republican, is also on the ballot for the primary race.

The coffee meeting will be held in an informal setting, and is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24.

Meerkerk Medley to raise funds

Organizers of the annual Meerkerk Medley, a fundraising evening for Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens that features delicious dinners in private homes, are looking for people interested in either hosting a dinner or attending as guests.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 2.

Classes still open for theater fans

Whidbey Island Theatre Festival runs through Aug. 16 and provides engaging educational opportunities, thought-provoking theatrical experiences and great entertainment for both adults and youths.

In preparation for auditions for the upcoming theater season, Whidbey Island Theatre Festival is offering a number of classes.

“Introduction to Alexander Technique,” taught by Lynne Compton, will focus on achieving an easeful flow in movement, ever-increasing physical and vocal range and flexibility, development of clarity and presence, and expansion of creativity and spontaneity.

It is for adults and will be held 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 25 and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26.

Students ages 9 through 12 can learn the art of stop-motion animation with skilled Claymation artist Robert Randall. The class will create original characters from clay and use film and computer techniques to bring them to life.

The class is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 4 to 6.

“Film Production Camp” will offer hands-on training in film production and film technique for students ages 12 through 18. Participants will work on an original film and take home a DVD of their filmed work.

The class is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, Aug. 4 to 8.
