High school gets grant from PSE
South Whidbey High School received a solar power installation grant from Puget Sound Energy. The grant will provide for the installation of photovoltaic systems, as well as educational tools that will help students monitor the systems and learn about solar power.
Students and volunteers installed two racks of four panels of photovoltaic solar cells on top of the bleachers at Waterman Field. The grant will pay half of the cost. The panels are expected to generate up to 200 watts of energy per panel on sunny days, for a total of 1.6 kilowatts. The panels will convert the generated direct current into alternating current for use at the school after being hooked into the school’s power grid.
Science teacher Jay Freundlich said savings could reach or exceed $400 dollars per year.
