Fort Nugent Park to get sculpture
The Oak Harbor Arts Commission has announced the first piece of public art brought about as a result of the city’s “1 Percent for the Arts” program. The limestone sculpture will eventually be installed in Fort Nugent Park in mid-August.
Kentucky artist Don Lawler is documenting his work on the Internet at www.restlessrocks.blogspot.com with photographs and comments detailing the steps he has taken so far on the artwork, which is being carved from a 13,000-pound limestone block.
Lawler’s design, entitled “Release,” was chosen from 16 sculptures submitted to the art commission’s first national call-to-artists.
The design is described as a seed pod bursting to release sprouts and leaf forms. It will be installed on a 3-foot-high berm at Fort Nugent Park near the playground area.
The project will cost $11,000.
Lawmaker hosts five coffee talks
State Rep. Barbara Bailey will hold five coffee talks in the 10th District this month, and three of them will be on Whidbey Island. Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, invites people to share their views in an informal setting.
Her stops on Whidbey will be 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21 at Solid Ground Coffee Shop, 275 SE Cabot Drive, Suite A9, in Oak Harbor; 10 a.m. Thursday, May 22 at 1504 Coffee at 18220 State Route 525, Freeland; and noon at Miriam’s Espresso Cafe, 200 S Main St., Coupeville.
The other coffee talks are 9 a.m. Friday, May 23 at Starbucks, 26802 92nd Ave. NW, Suite D1, Stanwood; and 11:30 a.m. at Islander’s Restaurant, 848 North Sunrise Blvd., Building D, Camano Island.
Deadline nears for film contest
Whidbey filmmakers have just one more week to submit entries on DVD to The Clyde Theatre Digital Film Contest.
There’s a $200 Grand Prize, and the best of the entries will show on the big screen during the free RainDance Short Film Festival during Choochokam, July 12 and 13.

Hospital calls for intern applicants
Whidbey General Hospital is looking for teens who want to take part in the hospital’s internship program this summer.
Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 who want to help patients or hospital staff indirectly – or simply to contribute to the hospital – are welcome to volunteer.
Those interested should be prepared to work three hours each week between July 7 and Aug. 29. An initial hospital orientation will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 1.
A tuberculosis test may be required and would be administered by the hospital.
Participants will be expected to be interested, reliable and to dress appropriately while at work. Volunteers will also be expected to purchase and wear a hospital polo shirt, which will be available at the hospital for $9.
Applications are available at the front desk and in the volunteer coordinator’s office.

Langley author is on bestseller list
“Careless in Red,” by Langley author Elizabeth George has landed in the fifth position on The New York Times Bestseller List in its first week on the list.
George kicked off her tour for the book at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts on May 6, the actual official release date for “Careless in Red.”
The book is the 15th in the author’s series of crime novels based on Detective Thomas Lynley.
Sno-Isle to host three open houses
Sno-Isle Libraries will hold meetings next month throughout the library district’s service area as part of its five-year strategic planning process.
The library district’s strategic plan sets out seven goals, from providing convenient and comfortable library facilities to having popular materials in a variety of formats. Sno-Isle is hoping for feedback from the public at three upcoming open houses.
The meetings will consist of a brief presentation, followed by an opportunity for participants to talk individually with library staff on activities that the library district can undertake to achieve its strategic goals. Some of the activities may include modifying open hours, increasing the availability of popular non-print materials like DVDs and identifying additional opportunities for building community partnerships.
Open houses are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29 at the Mountlake Terrace Library; 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 at the Snohomish Library; and 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at the Freeland Library.
Library users can also take a brief online survey and provide input on future library enhancements. That survey will be available beginning Thursday, May 22 at www.sno-isle.org.
