Boaters warned about Freeland dock
The Port of South Whidbey is warning boaters to be careful when using Freeland dock this Memorial Day weekend.
Several styrofoam-filled tires used to hold up the dock farthest from the shore have broken up or need repair. Though part of the end unit dips into the water a bit, it’s safe to use.
“I urge people to use caution this weekend when putting their boats in the water or fishing,” port manager Ed Field said. “We don’t want to shut the whole dock down and we’ll be replacing the tires with sealed plastic flotation bins as soon as they arrive.”
Clinton holds food drive during Mayfest
Clinton residents are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to Clinton’s Mayfest celebration and help fill up Good Cheer’s truck for the food bank.
Starting at 10 a.m. today, the truck will be located in front of Good Cheer’s Two Thrift store in Clinton and then will be moved to the Clinton Progressive Hall when the Mayfest celebration begins at 3 p.m.
Good Cheer is holding a friendly competition between Clinton in May, Freeland in July, Bayview in August and Langley in September to see how many pounds of food each community can donate to the food bank, which is now helping 18 percent of the South Whidbey with supplemental food.
A renewed emphasis is being placed on food drives this year to help meet the increased client demand and rising food costs.
Clinton food drive donors will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate good at Clinton FoodMart. Shoppers at the Clinton thrift store and Good Cheer’s clothing rack will also be able to receive discounts ranging from 5 to 75 percent by playing Wildcard Draw in which the playing card they draw determines their discount.
Rotary accepting grant applications
The Rotary Club of South Whidbey is now taking grant applications from local qualifying groups.
Applicants should be registered 501(c)(3) organizations and state specifically how the grant will be spent. The application deadline is June 2.
