Hearts & Hammers needs more helpers
Volunteers are still needed who have carpentry or roofing experience for Hearts & Hammers annual one-day work blitz on Saturday, May 3. This year, the nonprofit organization hopes to fix up 43 homes.

The homes selected this year for repair are from people who are financially or physically unable to do the work themselves. The no-cost repairs are done by community volunteers with materials and funds donated through businesses, individuals, churches and in-kind donations.
Last year, more than 400 volunteers took part in the work day.
Next Saturday morning, on
May 3, volunteers will gather at
7:45 a.m. at South Whidbey High School for breakfast and team assignments from their house captains. Volunteers will then do whatever repairs and renovations are possible within the scope of a one-day work party. Helpers are asked to bring gloves, rakes, shovels or any other equipment their house captain requested. Volunteers also need to bring a lunch.
Volunteers and homeowners are invited back to the high school at the end of the day for a well-deserved meal, entertainment and a wrap-up of the day’s work.

Friendship Force reports on Vietnam
“Focus on Vietnam” is the topic for the next meeting of Friendship Force of Whidbey Island.
Laura Strehlau, who led a national exchange to Vietnam in November, will be reporting on the goals and achievements of the exchange. Jerilynn Brusseau, co founder of Peace Trees Vietnam, will give a review of the land-mine removal project and other programs that assist communities and individuals who are living in areas of Quang Tri where unexploded ordnance still exists.
Club members who went on the exchange will comment on individual projects that they are doing since their return.
The Friendship Force will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 4 in the Front Room of the Cash Store at Bayview Corner. The public is invited, especially those people who have current Vietnam connections or projects that they would like to share with the group. Call Christine Williams at

Ferry fares to go up as peak season starts
The peak season officially starts May 1 for travelers on Washington ferries.
The change means an additional
25 percent surcharge for full fare vehicle/driver tickets.
From Clinton to Mukilteo, the fare for a car and driver will rise from $6.85 to $8.60.

Planning commission has packed agenda
The Island County Planning Commission will get an overview of the 2008 Legislative Session at its meeting later this month.
Planning commissioners will also get a staff presentation on the 2008 docket — this year’s batch of suggested revisions to the county’s growth plan. A formal public hearing on the
potential revisions will be held on
May 27. Also on the agenda, the topic of affordable housing and the designation of Camp Casey Conference Center as an existing master planned resort.
The planning commission will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 13 in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room in the county annex building in Coupeville.
Parks & Recreation meets on Monday
The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District will hold a special meeting Monday evening to discuss bid proposals for repairs to the Community Park ballfields.
“Commissioners will review deficiencies received from bidders, who failed to provide the required details of how they plan to solve the drainage problem,” business manager Peggy Hockett said.
The board will also discuss the selection of a project manager to handle projects that will be funded by the February bond measure.
The meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 28 at the South Whidbey Community Health Services building,
