A North Whidbey Middle School student is accused of making a threat to bomb the school on the day before a fake report of a shooting at the high school, according to court documents.
A police report indicates that the lockdown at the high school “amplified the fear” that students felt.
The students apparently didn’t report the boy for making the threat on Feb. 14, although they later told an administrator that it made them feel unsafe at the time. The next day, however, one of the students, after hearing about the high school lockdown, approached a dean in “a panic state” and revealed what had happened, the report states.
Three students wrote statements about hearing the boy make the threat. Although the high school lockdown may have been the impetus for students informing administration, the Oak Harbor police said the two incidents are not related.
The dean told police that the boy admitted to making the threat and filled out a statement. He allegedly told her that he didn’t know why he did it. There was no evidence that the boy actually planned on doing anything.
The administrator told police that the student had been “getting more violent at school lately” and had threatened to beat people up. He also had been making “derogatory statements” about students of color, the police report states.
The police arrested the boy at school. He was in Island County Juvenile Court Feb. 16 and the judge found probable cause existed to believe he committed the crime of threats to bomb or injure property. He was released on his own recognizance.
