Mike Nortier, executive director of Island Transit, provided Langley residents and the city council with an update and a look toward the future Monday night at City Hall. Nortier, a former Naval Air Station Whidbey commanding officer who was hired in March, said the transit system has been through “a lot” of turmoil and change over the past few years as a result of fiscal issues in 2014, and that he’s making efforts to turn things around.
One of those efforts, he said, is reviewing all of the transit routes and identifying areas where usage is low. By doing so, they can analyze ridership by time of day and be more efficient with their services.
The overarching goal, Nortier said, is to create a budget plan that will help Island Transit become fiscally sustainable for the future.
“If we rely entirely on the state, I think you’ll see much of what we have in the past, which is services that come and go, and sometimes a community that suffers because we can’t continually provide that level of service,” Nortier said. “That strategic review is to look at our services, glean efficiencies where we can and then offer to you as part of our discussions this fall, an opportunity to reflect on where you’d like to see changes in service, where we recommend those changes and where I think they’ll fit into our fiscal responsibilities.”
