Students at South Whidbey Elementary School got a boost toward learning music thanks to a fundraiser at the Useless Bay Golf & Country Club this past month.
The club’s social committee put on the third annual Concert on the Green for a night of music and dance on July 19. Kimmer Morris, the elementary school’s music teacher, accepted a check for $1,538 that she said will go toward repairing and purchasing instruments and sheet music.
Even a little bit of rain midway through the event didn’t deter the guests who were relocated inside and joined sides with the club’s remaining players of the South Whidbey Invitational Golf Tournament.
“It worked out great,” said Elizabeth Derrig, a member of the social committee that organized the fundraiser.
“Music is just so important,” she added.
Elementary school students opened the performances with a medley of songs they learned on the ukulele over the past year, culminating in “Wipeout” with a few students giving solos.
“It was cute,” said Bill Davis, the club’s general manager.
Morris said she is seeking instrument donations for the school, which she plans on using for the students and as a student prize at the end of the year.
