An Oak Harbor resident got fed up with someone shooting pellet guns at his vehicle and home and took matters into his own hands on March 5.

After two figures in hoodies shot the window of his SUV out and then one pointed a gun at his son, the man ran out of his house in socks and drove after the pickup truck that the alleged hooligans had fled in. He called 911 and reported what had happened as he continued the chase, with speeds increasing as they traveled on Crescent Harbor Road.

The police joined the chase and conducted a high-risk traffic stop on the pickup truck. The officers removed the driver, 19-year-old Andrew Garcia, and six other people — including four juveniles — who were inside the pickup. They claimed that they were headed to a party and didn’t know why they were being followed, according to the police report.

Police, however, found two pellet handguns inside the pickup, although Garcia said one of them didn’t work, the police report states. The pickup was towed for evidence.

The homeowner told police that the incident was the third time that his home or vehicle had been vandalized with pellet guns. The report indicates that the window to his SUV was shattered and several marks were on the door.

Prosecutors charged Garcia in Island County Superior Court June 9 with malicious mischief in the second degree.

The report isn’t clear about a possible motive for the vandalism. The report indicates that one of the passengers was upset with the homeowner over the death of a friend.
