Raymond Ammons, Lloyd A. Davis

Raymond Ammons

Raymond Steele Ammons, 83, passed away Jan. 29, 2002, in St. Louis. He joins his beloved wife, Claire Ammons, who died on the same date in 1998.

Raymond was born in Bentonville, Ark., Nov. 3, 1918. He lived the youth of a Mississippi boy, playing in the backcountry bayous, woods and fields with his brother, sister and cousins. An avid outdoorsman, Raymond hunted and fished most of his life. He built two houses during his lifetime, the latest on Ellwood Drive in Coupeville, where he and Claire lived for about 15 years.

Raymond was employed as a hydraulics engineer, working for Hughes, Douglas, Vega, McDonnell, Lockheed and Boeing during his career. He especially loved working on the C-130.

Raymond is survived by a sister, June Gay Hatcher of Meridian, Miss.; a daughter, Karen Ammons of Maryland Heights, Mo.; a nephew, Warren Hatcher of Tucson, Ariz.; and a niece, Patricia Ammons of Clarksdale, Miss.

Raymond was the world’s greatest Dad and his daughter’s hero.

At his request, no service will be held. Memorials in Raymond’s name may be sent to the Peel House Museum, 400 S. Walton Blvd., Bentonville, AR 72712. Raymond’s grandfather owned the house at one time and Raymond played there as a little boy. The house has been restored and is currently maintained by donations from public and private contributions.

Lloyd A. Davis

Lloyd A. Davis, age 70, a 13-year resident of Whidbey Island, died at Whidbey General Hospital Jan. 27, 2002.

Mr. Davis was born in Burbank, Calif., Jan. 22, 1932, to Orville Alton Davis and Elizabeth Marie (Kirby) Davis. He attended schools in Burbank, and graduated from Burbank High School in 1950. Following high school, he entered the Air Force, and was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

On June 20, 1953, Lloyd married Pat McDowell in Shreveport. While residing there, he worked as a fireman for the Shreveport Fire Department. After seven years, the couple moved to Southern California. Over the years, they returned to Shreveport several times. They lived in various locations throughout Southern California, including Burbank and Buena Park. Lloyd was employed as a prosthetics/orthotics practitioner for a number of years. In 1989, Lloyd and Pat moved to Langley, and moved to Oak Harbor in 1999.

Lloyd was a member of the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, and served on the Board of Trustees. He was an avid golfer, and was a member of the U.S. Golf Association. He was also an ardent fisherman and square dancer, and enjoyed wood working as well. He was assistant to the activities director at the Oak Harbor Retirement Community.

He is survived by his three children, Tane Turrell of San Diego, Calf., Darlus Peters and husband Steve of Longmont, Colo., and Troy Davis of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Jolene Rice and husband Jeremy of Hobbs, N.M., Greg Davis of Oak Harbor, C. J. Peters of Longmont, Colo., and Brea Wetzel of San Diego, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Journi Rice of Hobbs, N.M.; a sister, Janice E. Fowler and husband Al of Buena Park, Calif.; one brother, David O. Davis and wife Norma of Redmond, Ore.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, on Sept. 20, 2000, and by a grandson, Kaleb Peters, June 18, 1993.

A memorial service will held at 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Lura officiating. A private committal service will precede at Sunnyside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
