The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District was awarded the matching funds required to secure a grant that will fund the construction of six pickleball courts at the sports complex on Langley Road.

Before the state Recreation and Conservation Office announced it would award the district another $250,000 on July 24, it was unsure whether the courts would see the light of day. Now, the district is allowed to spend up to $500,000 for the project.

South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District Commissioner Matt Simms believes this is great news as it shows the state hasn’t forgotten about Whidbey, despite being more isolated than other areas in Washington.

“It’s a positive reflection of all the work that was done to prepare the applications,” he said.

A concept design was developed with the help of local pickleball players and submitted to the state last fall as part of the application process.

The courts will be located outdoors, between the soccer fields and the woods. The area has been leveled out in preparation for the second round of funding, as the district was feeling optimistic about their chances of getting the grant.

The concept design, which might see changes depending on the contractor and further input from pickleball groups, shows six fenced courts, a plaza with tables and seating, and an equipment shed.

Simms said they hope to get the project started between the end of 2023 and early 2024.
