Someone broke into Village Pizzeria on First Street in downtown Langley early Friday morning and made off with an ATM machine containing an undisclosed amount of cash.

Pizzeria owner Paul Sarkis said Friday afternoon that the intruder or intruders broke a window in the door to the pizzeria and grabbed the machine.

“They ripped apart the bolted-down ATM and drove off with it,” Sarkis said.

He said the robbery probably occurred in the early morning on Friday. The restaurant had closed at 9 p.m. as usual, and his wife Micky had driven by the building about 11:30 p.m. on her way home and all was quiet, Sarkis said.

He said the power cord of the restaurant’s refrigerator next to the ATM had also been pulled from the wall, but the food inside had was still cold at Friday’s opening.

Sarkis said it was the first break-in at the restaurant in the 16 years he’s owned it.

“That’s why we live in a quiet town like Langley,” he said.

“It was a really stupid thing to do,” Sarkis added. “There was a new flat-screen TV over the machine, and a cash register on the counter.”

But Sarkis remained upbeat, adding: “They must have got their signals crossed and thought being a pizzeria, there must be a lot of dough.”
