Oak Harbor police reopened Highway 20 on the south end of the city at about 7:30 p.m. after bomb techs searched a car and found nothing explosive, Chief Kevin Dresker said.

The section of highway was closed down at about 3:30 p.m.

A man who was due in court tomorrow allegedly made a threat to bomb the courthouse, according to the chief. Police located the man in his car at the Wendy’s restaurant today and pulled his car over while he was driving away.

The man claimed that he actually didn’t have any explosives and didn’t intend to blow anything up. Out of an abundance of caution, the police asked the Navy to deploy an explosive-sniffing dog to the man’s car and the dog alerted on the trunk, Dresker said.

As a result, the police evacuated Wendy’s, Whidbey Coffee and other nearby businesses. The highway in the section of the city was closed down and rerouted.

Bomb technicians from the State Patrol deployed a robot to search the car. The robot and bomb techs found a large variety of property and junk in the car, including a propane tank, but no bomb.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of making a threat to bomb.
