The final proposals for the Possession Ramp Renovation project were recently presented to Port of South Whidbey commissioners.

The commissioners heard from engineering firms Reid Middleton, Coast & Harbor Engineering, and Moffatt & Nichol at a meeting late last month, Sept. 24.

Each of the firms brought a different approach to the table, said Port Operations Manager Ed Field, and each had good ideas.

Coast & Harbor proposed to rebuild the ramp with few changes; Moffatt & Nichol suggested the use of raised blocks for the ramp; and, finally, Reid Middleton wanted to get the port through the permitting process and then make three more presentations.

The boat launch at Possession Beach is one of the Port’s premier assets, Commissioner Curt Gordon said.

“I would like to know if we’re going to move forward on a design, that it amounts to an improvement of the existing facility,” he said.

Gordon added he wants the ramp improved in such a way that the port will no longer have to expend time and resources clearing it of sand.

He also said there is still an opportunity to use a grant, which should lessen the financial burden of renovating the launch.

The port’s next regular meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the meeting room at South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District, 5475 Maxwelton Road in Langley.
