Port of South Whidbey commissioners will discuss the process by which the port will sell the uplands portion of its park property at Possession Point at a meeting next week.

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at South Whidbey Parks

& Recreation District headquarters, 5475 Maxwelton Road in Langley.

The commissioners late last year voted to sell about 10 acres of the park property, and keep the remaining 10 acres next to the beach.

The upper portion has been eyed by AT&T as a possible site for a 140-foot cell-phone tower. Nearby residents, however, want to preserve the parcel’s popular hiking trail and natural surroundings.

Ed Field, port manager, said next week’s discussion will focus on how the sale will be accomplished. Field said no offers have been solicited or received.

Commissioners also will discuss the port’s plan to expand the Langley Marina. Field said two permits were granted just before Christmas, a shorelines permit from the city of Langley, and the first hydraulic project approval from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“We’re making progress,” Field said of the proposal to refigure and expand the small-boat harbor to include an increase of the existing 38 boat slips to about 130, the removal of the existing dilapidated and abandoned wharf and the removal of a submerged pile of old tires, and eel-grass recovery and general improvement of the marine ecosystem.

The port hopes to begin construction on the $5.4 million first phase of the project by the end of this year, if grant funding can be secured.

At next week’s meeting, commissioners also will select new officers for the year and make committee assignments.

Other agenda items include a proposal for a commercial kitchen at the county fairgrounds in Langley, and a potential Langley-area “green” business park.
