A partial power failure left a student stuck inside an elevator Wednesday morning at South Whidbey High School.
The student, who was using the elevator because he was on crutches from a broken leg, was trapped inside for about a half hour.
Several firefighting and emergency response vehicles were rushed to the scene.
“We would have brought him out from the overhead emergency hatch, but that wouldn’t have worked because of the crutches,” Fire District 3 Chief Mike Cotton said. “The problem was solved within a short period, the power resumed, and he walked out OK.”
School officials said the elevator in question was “notorious” for having its doors occasionally open and close without warning. It’s on the list to be fixed sometime next year.
The identity of the student was not released.
