A handful of people were welcomed into the South Whidbey Fire/EMS family Tuesday at a ceremony in Freeland.
“Tonight we acknowledge your successful completion of the fire academy,” South Whidbey Fire/EMS Chief Rusty Palmer said in a news release. “But more importantly, this marks the beginning of a significant new role for you in your community. As a firefighter, you will have both rewarding and challenging experiences, and be tested in ways you’ve never imagined. This is something you should be excited about. This accomplishment is a life achievement you should be very proud of.”
Over the past six months, the recruits spent 150 hours testing and undergoing basic training at the fire academy. Training continues throughout the rest of their fire service careers in special drills and at sessions every Tuesday night at their stations.
Many of the new members have already responded to fire, medical and marine rescue calls since graduating from the academy in June. Now, they will all be fully integrated into their departments.
Applications to attend the academy will be accepted until Oct. 31. The next fire academy begins in January.
South Whidbey Fire/EMS is composed of volunteers for fire suppression, emergency medical service, and marine and rope rescue to residents and visitors.
