Red Cross issues an emergency call for blood

A winter blood shortage has spurred The American Red Cross to issue an emergency call for blood and platelet donors.

The organization received about 37,000 fewer donations in November and December than what was needed, according to a recent news release. It resulted in nearly 100 blood drive cancellations and more than 3,100 blood donations going uncollected.

Hectic holiday schedules, snowstorms and severe weather are blamed for the lack of donations.

“Blood and platelet donations are critically needed in the coming days so that patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatments they are counting on,” Neil Tosuntikool of the Pacific Northwest Red Cross Blood Services Region said in the news release. “We encourage donors to invite a family member or friend to donate with them to help meet patient needs. Right now, blood and platelet donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in.”

To learn how to donate, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The organization is extending hours at many donation sites for more donors to give blood or platelets. Giving blood takes about 60 minutes.

“In about an hour, you can help save someone’s life,” Tosuntikool said. “This simple act can have a profound impact on another human being.”
