U.S. Representative Rick Larsen announced today he has helped garner $6.18 million in federal funding for a new facility to train firefighters at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
The funding is included in the military construction appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009. It was passed by the Appropriations Committee this week and must get approval in the House and Senate before it can be signed into law.
The $6.18 million would be used to replace temporary facilities now in use at the Oak Harbor Navy base with a new 4,600-square-foot academic fire instructional facility.
Larsen, a 2nd District Democrat, praised the project and vowed to continue seeking additional funds for vital projects in Island County.
“A new, permanent facility will help servicemen and women at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island train to fight fires on aircraft and be ready for any contingency,” Larsen said. “I will continue working in Congress to deliver federal resources for Naval Air Station Whidbey and Island County priorities.”
