“Homeless, H/W/P (height, weight, proportional) rooster with missing tail feathers seeks companionship with mild mannered hen(s) with own house.”

If the rooster living in South Whidbey Community Park could place a personal ad, it might read something like that.

The jaunty chanticleer arrived about a week ago and was discovered by South Whidbey Parks and Recreation coordinator Linda Kast.

“I was walking my dog when she ran over to a tree and started barking,” Kast said. “I walked over to see what was going on and there was this rooster sitting about half-way up a fir tree. He seemed friendly and not particularly frightened of the dog.”

In spite of the barking, the rooster seems to want to stay put. So parks district staff members went ahead this week and named him. He is now known as Parker.

Kast said she checks on the capricious capon everyday. He seems glad to have people around and will fly out of the tree to eat popcorn.

“He greets me with a cock-a-doodle-do no matter what time of day I see him.”

However, in spite of his upbeat attitude, Parker’s physique and health seem to be suffering. Kast says he doesn’t look as healthy as he did when he arrived at the park a week ago.

“He had beautiful long tail feathers, but I noticed a couple of days ago they are missing,” she said. “I’m afraid a dog got hold of him. We would like to see him returned to his home or adopted by someone who would take care of him.”
